Madison, Wis., Feb.
23, 2001 -- Sonic Foundry, Inc., a leading developer of digital media
and Internet software tools, products, and services, today announced that
its digital suite of audio software tools including Vegas Video and Sound
Forge, were utilized in Douglas Spotted Eagle's Grammy Award winning recording
for the ``Gathering of Nations Pow Wow.'' The Grammy Award was given at
the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, February
22, 20001, in the Native American Music Album category, a new category
introduced this year.
For Gathering of Nations 2000, Douglas Spotted Eagle and his colleagues,
Herman Begay and David Hamilton recorded the event on a hard-disk system
equipped with a suite of Sonic Foundry products including Sound Forge,
CD Architect, and Vegas Video. The three were asked to record 200 songs
over the course of two days, select 18-20 from the Friday and Saturday
sets, and provide a Red Book CD Master by the following Monday at noon.
The work was captured through Vegas Video in real-time and immediately
edited in a hotel room in Albuquerque that the trio had transformed into
an editing suite using Sonic Foundry software. This was the first time
the group had used all digital equipment in a live setting.
``This Grammy award is amazing and I am honored to represent the Native
American culture through music. Sonic Foundry has enabled me to move seamlessly
into a digital platform, making my world and my music the best it can
be. This event was captured live and for the first time in our experience,
captured all digitally. A risky proposition, but Sonic Foundry's products
came through for us,'' commented Douglas Spotted Eagle. ``I wouldn't have
trusted this project to any set of media production tools other than Sonic
Foundry products.
From being able to multitrack sessions in Vegas Video to mastering in
Sound Forge and creating the CD image with CD Architect, I could have
only trusted a project of this scope to the best products available.''
The three-day Gathering of Nations is the world's largest reunion of indigenous
people and attracts 50,000 visitors and 3,000 dancers and singers who
represent 700 tribes from Canada and the United States. They converge
on the University of New Mexico's arena each spring for their annual celebration
of Native American culture. Additional information on the Gathering of
Nations Pow Wow and how Douglas Spotted Eagle utilizes Sonic Foundry software
