AKG C 2000 B New Condenser Microphone

Cardioid polar response for multiplicity of applications

Vienna, Aust., July 6, 2000 -- The newly developed small-diaphragm transducer capsule is made using a unique manufacturing process (patent applied for) that ensures high sensitivity, low self noise, and excellent bass response. The C 2000 B provides an extremely flat frequency response with a slight high-frequency boost that adds clarity and compensates for HF loss in far-miking situations. A transformerless output stage ensures excellent low-end definition. With its cardioid polar response, the C 2000 B is an all-purpose sound reinforcement microphone.

Conforming to the styling line originally created for the C 1000 S, C 3000 B, C 4000 B and the SolidTube, the all-metal case of the C 2000 B is finished in silver gray with a red decorative ring. The high proportion of wire-mesh in relation to the solid metal surfaces sharply emphasizes the acoustic aspects of the design.

The cardioid polar response is perfectly suited for both recording and live sound situations. The on-axis frequency response is extremely flat with a 3 to 4 dB upper high-frequency boost between 8 and 12 kHz for added presence.

The Capsule is a new design of a backplate electret, ½ inch diameter with (patent applied for) manipulation of the design to achieve certain "features" of a large (1 inch) diaphragm, like high sensitivity (20 mV/Pa), higher capacitance which leads to lower self-noise at the input of the following impedance converter / preamp stage, and an extended low end with smooth roll-off below 100 Hz. This means, that the capsule captures the best of both worlds: the inherent accuracy of a small diaphragm condenser transducer for capturing truthfully transients and higher harmonics of the sound source and the more practical features of higher sensitivity and low noise to keep the overall gain of the following stages in the recording chain as low as possible.

The die-cast metal body is vacuum cast to prevent cavitation. It consists of two parts that are screwed together gaplessly to ensure electromagnetic compatibility. In an extended series of tests, a material was selected for the internal pop screen that had the right ppi value for minimal high-frequency attenuation and maximum noise rejection.
