Adaptec Offers Twist and Flat Internal Cable for Ultra 160 LVD

Milpitas, Calif., July 13, 2000 -- Twenty percent of Adaptec Technical Support calls are due to customers using non-Adaptec, substandard cables. Many customers don't realize that the quality of cable configurations attached to a SCSI bus can influence the integrity and speed of data.

Adaptec provides high quality, thoroughly tested cable solutions that strictly adhere to SCSI specifications. By using high quality cables customers don't have to worry about data integrity and high byte termination issues.

The latest high speed SCSI protocol, Ultra 160 (160 MB per second), uses a data transfer technique called Low Voltage Differential (LVD). In this signaling mode, the negative and positive halves of the differential signal travel adjacent to each other in pairs. In addition, the Ultra 160 protocol includes dual edge clocking, different capacitive loading requirements for devices connected on the bus, and tighter tolerances. Consequently, issues such as cross-talk between signal pairs, signal reflections, and setup/hold time have become extremely important considerations. Add these to a real-life applications which include factors such as: mother board type, number of drives on the bus, grounding and emissions inside the chassis, and the quality of the cable becomes crucial to data transfer integrity.

Adaptec offers a twist and flat internal cable that is essential to address all of the above concerns when using an LVD SCSI configuration. This type of cable not only provides excellent immunity to the aforementioned concerns, but also holds great promise for future faster speed in the SCSI evolution. The company carries a full line of LVD internal and external cables. All are backwards compatible, supporting both Ultra 2 and Ultra 160 Protocols.
