SADiE Demonstrates AES31 File Exchange at AES Los Angeles

Cambridgeshire, UK, October 10, 2000 - Following the announcement to incorporate the AES31 file exchange standard into SADiE workstations earlier this year, SADiE was privileged to participate in the first public demonstration of AES31 at the recent AES Exhibition in Los Angeles on Friday 22nd September.

As one of the instigators of AES31, SADiE managing director Joe Bull took a leading role in the presentation by proving the viability of file exchange between a SADiE workstation and other manufacturers' equipment.

In the demonstration, a sample of voice material was recorded onto a Zaxcom Deva portable recorder, and then transferred to SADiE where it was edited before being extensively replayed on a DAR OMR8 dubber/workstation. The demonstration then concluded with the bi-directional interchange of material and edit lists between SADiE and DAR.

SADiE recently announced a development agreement with Brooks Harris to implement the AES31 universal digital audio interchange format for the range of SADiE workstations. The new product comprises a development of the existing Windows NT/95/98 EDLMAX software, which is a product of Brook Harris Film and Tape, Incorporated of NYC.

AES31 is the proposed standard for network and file transfer of digital audio. Several digital audio workstation manufacturers are now in the process of implementing AES31-3 for simple project interchange. The format is an open non-proprietary standard that is not exclusive to any single manufacturer nor trade association.

AES31-3 defines edited audio including cross fades and is text based, in the manner of a traditional EDL, which makes it easily readable and correctable if circumstances require it. The format is sample accurate and supports multi channel files in excess of 99 channels, as well as interchange between PAL and NTSC formats.

The goal of the AES31 standard is to re-introduce to the professional audio industry the concept of universal interchange. A universal format for interchanging audio has not been present since the days of analogue tape.

Joe Bull, SADiE's Managing Director commented, " I am proud to have been one of the instigators of the AES31 format and honoured to have been able to take part in the first ever public demonstration of the effectiveness of AES31. Ever since digital audio workstations have become the norm for so many professional audio applications, there has been a growing demand for a common interchange format. We have always promoted interchange between SADiE and other workstation manufacturers and already support the broadest range of disk, file and EDL formats. I am pleased to announce that we will shortly be able to bring the obvious benefits of AES31 to SADiE customers across the world".
