Eden Prairie, Minn., April 25, 2000 -- Coda Music Technology, Inc.announced today that it has entered into a licensing relationship with Musitek of Ojai, California. The agreement allows Coda use of Musitek's MidiScan music scanning software technology within Coda's music notation products such as Finale, Allegro and PrintMusic!. The MidiScan technology will allow Coda customers to import a TIF, PCX or BMP file of printed music produced by any scanning device, translate it into a Finale file and display it within Coda's notation software products for editing, playback or printing. Although the character recognition of scanned music is not as perfected as the character recognition of scanned text, Musitek is generally considered to have the best music scanning technology. Coda products, in addition to providing MidiScan technology, will also import files from Musitek's other music scanning product, SmartScore, which can be purchased separately.

Coda's Finale 2000 Software

Music scanning expedites the process of taking printed music and turning it into a flexible digital format. This is a useful feature for customers of Coda's notation products who have printed music they wish to edit, hear, print and archive in the Finale file format. All Coda notation products use the Finale file format so that they can share files, including between Macintosh and Windows computers.

"These new scanning capabilities are also important for music publishers" stated Coda CEO John Paulson. "Many of these publishers, including the largest, create most or all of their new print music products with Finale. This scanning technology will make it faster and cheaper for them to create Finale files of their older print music titles produced with a mechanical press."

Coda's Finale product currently imports MidiScan files but does not have the music character recognition technology. Thus users have had to purchase MidiScan separately for $199. With this license agreement, Coda is able to integrate MidiScan into its notation products, increasing their value and usefulness.
