Euphonix Updates R-1 and System 5 at AES 2000 Convention
Version 2.0 of constantly evolving System 5 software offers fail-safe and self-diagnostics, plus redundant DSP and hot-swap

Palo Alto, Calif., June 29, 2000 -- At the upcoming AES 2000 Convention in Los Angeles, Euphonix Inc. will unveil newly developed V2.0 Software for the System 5 High Performance Digital Audio Console that offers a number of features developed specifically for the music recording and post-production industries, plus V3.0 Software for the R-1 Digital Multitrack Recorder.

Also to be seen: a practical demonstration of the new Listen-In Service, which allows System 5-equipped facilities to offer live, secure access to a high-quality control room mix via any high-speed Internet connection. The real-time service streams a secure, high-quality control room mix to producers and clients anywhere in the world. A producer or client can offer creative suggestions to the engineering team in the control room via a telephone call. Authorized listeners log on using any audio-capable Internet Station.

"Software upgrades have been a continuous process since the inception of System 5 and the R-1," states chief product officer and founder, Scott Silfvast. "Our constant and evolving software and hardware development program is based on an intense involvement with our customers, including music-recording studios, post facilities and broadcasters around the world."

With 34 systems sold to date, the innovative Euphonix System 5 - "The Three-in-One Solution" - is designed to handle a wide cross section of applications for music, on-air broadcast, film and video post facilities that require greater than 100 channel paths of full digital signal processing. Incorporating a unique combination of a programmable core and programmable user interface, System 5 consoles can be reconfigured quickly and easily to provide a truly flexible production environment. System 5-equipped facilities include Skywalker Sound, The Hit Factory, Front Page Recorders, Soundproof Studios, One Union, Chicago Recording Company, KOMO-TV, KTVT/CBS-11, KCET-TV, WCAX-TV, Rasheed Wallace's Urban Life, Music Cool Beans Digital Audio, Monterey Post, Deluxe Laboratories, Media Principia, Emerald Sound Studios, JAM Creative, WWF Entertainment, LDS Church and Intersound.

"We are committed to responding to the needs of the international music-recording, post industry and broadcast by releasing regular updates that provide major functional enhancements for our target markets," said company president Piers Plaskitt.

Major new features of System 5 Version 2.0 software include:

  • A fully-featured Fail Safe and Diagnostics System that provides hot-swappable redundant processing modules that will automatically take over in the event of a DSP or control failure. Failed cards may be hot swapped without having to reboot the system.
  • On-Screen Diagnostics that constantly report GOOD/FAIL status of all system components, and provide confidence checks as well as troubleshooting.
  • Expansion of System 5's Integrated PatchNet I/O Router to accommodate 672 by 672 sources and destinations at a sampling rate of 48 kHz (336x336 at 96 kHz).
  • Multi-format Channels - Stereo, LCR, LCRS, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and others - that allow an operator to control more than one channel at a time from a single on-surface channel strip. Stereo channels can implement MS (Middle-Side) mic techniques. Stereo channels can also instantly recover from a loss of one side with a single key press.
  • Backstop PFL (pre-fader listen) switching on all console faders.

"From the outset," Scott Silfvast continues, "System 5 was designed to be the most reliable console available. Music studios and post facilities no longer needs to be cautious about going digital, because System 5 provides more visual feedback than any design, and is easy to use. Plus: System 5's redundancy of all major processors is essential for maximum fault tolerance."

Designed to offer the user familiarity of tape-based multitracks with the creative editing capabilities and speed offered by random-access, disk-based technology, the R-1's newly developed V3.0 Software provides full 48-track capabilities at both 48 and 96 kHz sample rates. Other major new features of R-1 Version 3.0 software include:

  • Hot Plugging of disk drives during a session.
  • Incremental Back-up and Restore.
  • Audible Shuttle from below 1x to 32x playback speed in either direction.
  • Waveform Display.
  • WAVE Audio File Import/Export.
  • Ability to handle current Large-capacity Disk Drives.
