AES 117th Convention Broadcasting Events coordinator David Bialik has developed three compelling panels to apprise radio professionals of technological advances and career opportunities across the broadcast spectrum.
?We have been especially fortunate to attract a group of outstanding participants,? Bialik said. ?Their depth of knowledge and ability to articulate the issues challenging our industry today will provide attendees with serious food for thought.? The convention will be held at the Moscone Center Oct. 28-31, 2004.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE ENGINEER IN THE DIGITAL BROADCAST WORLD will address shifting job prospects and the training necessary for a successful career in broadcasting today. Moderated by John Casey of Radio World, the Panel will include: Andy Butler - PBS, Tony Masiello - XM Radio, Glynn Walden - Viacom/ Infinity, David Wilson - CE and David Layer - NAB.

SURROUND SOUND FOR DIGITAL RADIO will be held from 9:00 am ? 12:00 noon. Moderator Emil Torik and Panelists: Robert Orban ? Orban, Rocky Graham - Dolby Labs; Frank Foti - Telos Omnia, Robert Reams - Neural Audio; Alan Kraemer ? SRS Labs; Tony Masiello - XM Radio and Michael Lyons - Ibiquity will discuss radio?s evolution past the barriers of stereo and the introduction of Surround Sound to broadcasting. The panel will discuss the various 5.1 systems currently in the market and their ability to interface with existing broadcast and bandwidth restraints.
David Bialik points to one additional 117th AES Convention event of particular interest to broadcasters. On Saturday Oct. 30th from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM Mike Adams will present an Historical abstract entitled: THE BIRTH OF RADIO BROADCASTING: CHARLES HERROLD AND THE FIRST RADIO STATION. In 1909, ten years before licensed broadcasting and the first use of the word ?radio,? Herrold, an obscure inventor living in the Santa Clara Valley created a broadcast station based on a radiotelephone with a water-cooled microphone comprised of six carbon buttons in a telephone-like handset. Any radio buff will be sure to enjoy this fascinating peek into broadcast history.?
